The Staples girls water polo team won its first-ever tournament.

Staples won the Hopkins Invitational tournament with a 17-13 victory over Williston and an 11-10 triple-overtime triumph over host Hopkins.

Senior tri-captain Stephanie Nussbaum led the Lady Wreckers on offense for the entire tournament with seven goals, five against Williston. Sophomore Sarah Cooperman had six goals, four against Williston. Next for Staples was senior tri-captain Maddie Mafilios with five tallies, including a team-leading four against Hopkins. Juniors Gabby Wimer (four) and Emily Greene (three) were next and senior Margot Bruce, sophomore Molly Rubidge and freshman Sarah Banbury had one goal each.

Sophomore Emily Garber had 17 saves in both games combined and Bruce stopped eight shots in the two games. Bruce also stopped Hopkins at the end of regulation, which forced an overtime and gave the Lady Wreckers a chance to win.

Staples Assistant Coaches Brandon Barone and Brandon Arias ably filled in for Head Coach Mike Laux, who was out of town.

This Week — May 31st to June 3rd: last practices, East Lyme games and Senior Day on Friday

This week is the last official week of practice for this season.

 

Practices on Wednesday and Thursday are coed.

 

On Friday, we have our last games vs. East Lyme and also Senior Day.  Per Coach Laux, please be at the pool by 4:00 pm for a short practice that will be followed by the Senior Day, all before the East Lyme games, which are scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30.  Girls and boys will play on Friday vs. East Lyme.

Schedule — Memorial Day Weekend and Week of May 30th

Memorial Day Weekend –There will be no practices on Friday through Monday of this weekend.  The last practice of this week is Thursday, May 26th and then next practice after that will be Tuesday, May 31st.

 

Week of May 30 –  The scrimmage vs. East Lyme High School has been moved due to a conflict on their end.  Instead of  Saturday, June 11, we will play them on Friday, June 3rd.  We are planning a boys and a girls game, perhaps coed as well.  The game is home.  They plan to arrive at 5:30 pm.   This will also be our Senior Day.

Week of May 23rd — Ice cream celebration today after practice and no practice on Friday, May 27th

Coaches Brandon and Brandon are treating the girls to ice cream this afternoon at the end of practice to celebrate their win at the Hopkins tournament.  Practice today will end a bit early in order to enjoy the ice cream and still be ready for rides home at the regular time.

 

There will be no practice on Friday , May 27 th or Saturday, May 28th as a  result of the Memorial Day holiday.

The Staples girls water polo team won its first-ever tournament.

Staples won the Hopkins Invitational tournament with a 17-13 victory over Williston and an 11-10 triple-overtime triumph over host Hopkins.

Staples Girls defeated Williston Northampton 17 to 13 and won against Hopkins 11 to 10 in triple overtime!!!  Way to go girls and coaches too !!!

Hopkins Tournament — Bus and Game Times

The bus for Hopkins will leave Staples at 8:oo am on Saturday. (No practice Saturday morning.)

Game times are :

10 am vs. Williston Northhampton

11:20 vs. Hopkins

Week of May 16th — Pasta Dinner, Hopkins Tournament and Car Wash

Friday, May 20th — Pasta dinner at the the Garber’s home, 12 Colony Road, directly after practice.  As this dinner has been added to the original schedule, we are in need of  volunteer contributions for :

Garlic Bread for 30 people
Salad for 15 people
Salad for 15 people
Fruit Dessert for 30 people
2 half gallons of ice cream
2 half gallons of ice cream
3 ice cream sauces and sprinkles
Paper Goods for 30 people(napkins, plates, forks and spoons
Water bottles for 30 people
Individual chocolate milk boxes and juice boxes for 30 people

Saturday,  May 21st –Girls  tournament at Hopkins School.  The first game is at 10 am.  We will be playing Williston Northampton School and Hopkins.  Bus time will be announced shortly, probably something like 8 am on Saturday morning.
Sunday, May 22nd — Water Polo Car Wash, details to follow.

Upcoming Weekend Schedule

Friday, May 13th –The JV girls have an away game vs. Choate  There is a 2:00 pm dismissal and the bus will leave as soon as possible.

 

Saturday, May 14th – Regular practice.  Theo Sullivan  (head boys’ coach) will run the practice.  The original coed game vs. East Lyme has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 11.  This is a new date.

 

Monday, May 16th — The coed game vs. Greenwich YMCA is being rescheduled.  Stay posted for the new date.
