Staples Wins Hopkins Invitational Tournament!

The Staples girls water polo team won its first-ever tournament.
Staples won the Hopkins Invitational tournament with a 17-13 victory over Williston and an 11-10 triple-overtime triumph over host Hopkins.
Senior tri-captain Stephanie Nussbaum led the Lady Wreckers on offense for the entire tournament with seven goals, five against Williston. Sophomore Sarah Cooperman had six goals, four against Williston. Next for Staples was senior tri-captain Maddie Mafilios with five tallies, including a team-leading four against Hopkins. Juniors Gabby Wimer (four) and Emily Greene (three) were next and senior Margot Bruce, sophomore Molly Rubidge and freshman Sarah Banbury had one goal each.
Sophomore Emily Garber had 17 saves in both games combined and Bruce stopped eight shots in the two games. Bruce also stopped Hopkins at the end of regulation, which forced an overtime and gave the Lady Wreckers a chance to win.
Staples Assistant Coaches Brandon Barone and Brandon Arias ably filled in for Head Coach Mike Laux, who was out of town.

Staples Girls Water Polo Team Continues to Improve

Nussbaum scores five goals for improving Staples girls water polo in 15-12 loss.
After grabbing its first win in the program’s history on Wednesday, Staples hosted a formidable Choate Rosemary Hall the falling day. Although the Lady Wreckers lost 15-12 in dropping to 1-1, they showed that they have made giant strides from previous years.
Senior tri-captain Stephanie Nussbaum led Staples with five goals and fellow senior tri-captain Maddie Mafilios, junior Emily Greene and sophomore Sarah Cooperman had two goals each. Sophomore Molly Rubidge had the Lady Wreckers’ other tally.
Sophomotr Emily Garber, senior Margot Bruce and sophomore Allegra Chaple took turns playing goalie for Staples.

The Staples girls water polo team won its first match in its history with a 12-11 verdict at Hopkins Wednesday.
Senior tri-captain Stephanie Nussbaum and sophomore Sarah Cooperman led Staples with three goals each. Scoring two a piece for the Lady Wreckers were senior tri-captain Maddy Mafilios and junior Gabby Wimer. Senior tri-captain Danni McGovern and junior Emily Greene had one goal each for Staples.
Coming up with six saves was senior goalie Margot Bruce.
